Free tax preparation is now available for low and moderate-income individuals, families and seniors as various tax preparation sites throughout Dutchess and Orange Counties have officially opened for business.
Thanks to the Hudson Valley Cash Coalition, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region and many other community partners, those in need of this service can now begin making appointments to file their 2014 federal and state income taxes. Anyone in need can call the United Way Hudson Valley Region 2-1-1 Helpline or dial 1-800-899-1479. A call specialist will review eligibility, make an appointment, provide directions to tax sites and provide a complete list of required documents for an appointment.
“By getting help with filing their taxes, many people will get much needed refunds that can be used to pay rent, medical bills and to buy food and fulfill other basic needs," says Steven V. Lant, Interim President and CEO of United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region. "We proudly support the Hudson Valley Cash Coalition and its partner organizations with grants from the United Way Community Fund. This program is a great example of how we can all come together to help residents gain financial stability. It remains the cornerstone of our mission.”
Over 35 tax preparation locations are conveniently located throughout Dutchess and Orange Counties and will be staffed by expert, volunteer tax preparers, seven days-a-week, including evenings and weekends through April 15th. Assistance will be available for the hearing-impaired and for those who need a translator. The tax service is open to area residents of all ages who meet income guidelines. AARP membership is not required.
Last year, nearly 7,000 people took advantage of this free tax service, resulting in nearly $5.6 million returned to the people who need it most in the form of refunds and tax credits. This year, individuals earning less than $14,590 and working families earning less than $52,427 may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit when filing their 2014 tax returns.
