United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region celebrated a successful conclusion of its 2014 Campaign for the Common Good with last night’s “Celebration of Service” Awards event held at Anthony’s Pier 9 in New Windsor.
“Our thanks go out to the thousands of area residents who have made charitable gifts to the United Way individually and through their workplace campaigns during the 2014 Campaign for the Common Good,” said Steven E. Howell, United Way Chairman. “This event is our way of recognizing some of them as well as our nonprofit partners and volunteers. I am so proud to announce that when all the dollars are counted at the end of our fiscal year on June 30, we expect to have raised more than $2.3 million dollars. We could not do this without all of you.”
More than 300 people attended the event, which honored volunteers, donors, community partners and sponsors as well as long-time volunteer and community leader, Steven V. Lant, the recipient of the inaugural Distinguished Leadership Award.
Steven V. Lant, the Distinguished Leadership Award recipient, was recognized for three decades of service to the community. Lant, who retired in October 2014 as CEO of Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp., has served on the Dutchess County board of the United Way from 1997–2008, as its chair from 2003–05, as interim leader in 2004, and as Interim President and CEO from November 2014 through March 18, 2015.
Event attendees had the chance to learn more about some of the United Way’s Nonprofit Partners during the pre-dinner nonprofit showcase reception at individual tables staffed by the organizations. Event guests also had the chance to meet Jeannie Montano, the incoming President and CEO of the United Way, who was introduced during the program.
Through its annual Campaign for the Common Good, the United Way raises funds for the Community Fund that are granted to local nonprofit organizations as they work together to assist people in need. In 2013, thanks to the tremendous generosity of residents of Dutchess and Orange counties, United Way touched the lives of more than 74,000 of our friends and neighbors -- the equivalent of 1 in 10 residents of Dutchess and Orange -- through funds granted to its nonprofit partner organizations.
