Meet Roberto and his family

Every day Roberto has worked hard for his family. Starting his own business was his lifelong dream and learning the plumbing trade was his assurance to security. But now, because of COVID, all his jobs were canceled and his savings was quickly depleted. When he reached out to us, his main concern was for those he was supporting - his wife, his son and daughter and his mother. He was afraid he was going to lose his home.

Thanks to you, United Way was able to keep Roberto and his family safe and they didn't have to choose between food or shelter. There are too many Robertos right now, having to make impossible choices because of the impact of COVID-19 in our community. Help us help them through your donation to United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region.

Meet Angie

Angie served her country with pride, but when she returned home she struggled. Her boyfriend of years broke up with her. Weeks later she discovered she was pregnant. Now, she was giving birth a few weeks early and was scared as COVID-19 was everywhere. She'd had to give up working a few weeks earlier as her doctor was concerned for her health. She'd been struggling to pay rent and utilities on her salary, now on the day she welcomed her baby into the world she didn't know what to do. She couldn't even go home as she hadn't been able to set up the nursery.

When we got the call at United Way about Angie, we were able to help her. She was able to go home with her son and start their life together with the basic necessities, including a car seat, crib, diapers and onesies. Until United Way stepped in, Angie didn't know what she'd do. Thanks to you we were able to be there for her. Help us help other people like Angie through your donation to United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region.

Meet Jada

Jada commutes to community college by bus. It takes her about 45 minutes every day to get to the evening classes, but she is determined to get her degree so she can provide for her daughter Shondra. But last week she lost her job when her employer closed and her unemployment benefits weren't available yet. As she has no savings and lives paycheck to paycheck, she wasn't sure she had enough to cover rent or food, let alone get to school. Thanks to the college student emergency fund, she received money toward her rent and was connected to the school food pantry. They also provided help for her bus passes to and from school and helped her work with the career center to find a new job.

Thanks to the college student emergency fund, Jada was able to maintain a 3.34 GPA and find a new job. She's looking forward to graduating from community college next semester, the first person in her family to get a degree!

To help students like Jada, make your gift to the College Student Emergency Fund this semester and your gift will be matched dollar for dollar.
