Community Partners in Action: Book Buddies

Today Kevin Cleary, United Way Board Member and Vice President of Sales at IBM, visited Book Buddies at Gov. Clinton Elementary School.

Kevin got to witness Book Buddies “in action” working with at-risk children. Clinton is on their 5th year in the Book Buddies Program.  Julie Falco the Reading Teacher at Clinton Elementary uses the Book Buddy program as an informal intervention when a child starts falling behind.

Following his visit, Mr. Cleary commented, “My thanks to Judy Connolly and all the Book Buddies volunteers who spend thousands of hours each year helping elementary students in Dutchess and Orange Counties (NY) improve their reading skills.”

In addition, he extended. “a special thank you to Julie Falco and the teachers at Gov. Clinton Elementary School for their leadership and dedication helping Poughkeepsie students learn. Well done!”

Clinton utilizes 25 volunteers and has 47 students in the program. There are 105 Book Buddy volunteers all together and 153 students in total but more volunteers are needed!  Book Buddies is showing success in improving children’s reading scores and is now in 11 schools across Dutchess and Orange.
