Free Tax Preparation 2021

New Guidelines for Free Tax Preparation

Due to COVID-19, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide will modify tax preparation service for the 2021 season.

There are 2 options for free tax preparation this season:

  • Tax Site Service
  • No Contact Service

Both options are by appointment ONLY.

In addition, there are online sites for free tax preparation:

IRS does not allow Tax-Aide to complete returns that are Out of Scope.

We will not be able to complete your tax return if:

  • You were a resident of another state anytime in 2020.
  • You had rental income (including Airbnb) 2020.
  • Declared bankruptcy in 2020.
  • Out of state Income – Exception CT, Penn, NJ.
  • Own your own business - with business loss, expenses greater than $35,000, or inventory.
  • This is not the entire list - You are responsible for reviewing all eligibility information outlined in this document.

APPOINTMENT ONLY

  • Your documents will be electronically scanned during your appointment Tax-Aide volunteers will access your information and prepare your return remotely.
  • Or your documents will be securely held at a site for Tax-Aide volunteers to prepare your return, you will return after preparation is completed. (please make copies)
  • ​Above Service require two tax-site visits and availability for phone conference with Tax-Aide Volunteers

REQUIREMENTS

  • Have access to the internet.
  • Have a valid personal email address (or use of one from a trusted friend or relative).
  • Have access to a printer or be able to pick-up required paperwork at tax site prior to your appointment during open daytime hours.
  • Willing to fill out all required paperwork in advance of your appointment.
  • Have ALL your tax documents in hand a in advance of your appointment.
  • Attend a scheduled appointment at a Tax-Aide Site.
  • Understand and agree that Tax-Aide volunteers will access your information and tax documents either electronically or be in possession of your tax documents for the period that they are preparing your return.
  • Be available to speak with Tax-Aide Preparers for at least 2 telephone conferences.
  • Return to the tax site at the appointed return time - this time will be assigned to you when you drop off your documents.
  • If filing a joint return, both parties must attend this second appointment to authorize e-filing of your return.

Please understand changes in the COVID situation or host Tax Site could cause your appointment to be cancelled. We will contact you immediately if a situation like this arises.

No Contact Service is under consideration.

  • Virtual Tax-Preparation - You will electronically scan all documents and email them to Tax-Aide. Tax-Aide volunteers will communicate with you to complete your return.
  • Above Service requires ability to print, scan and video conference with Tax-Aide Volunteers

Review requirements for each method carefully. Appointments are limited, in the event instructions are not carefully followed, you may not be able to get a second appointment. You will be required to identify which service model you are requesting when calling 211 for an appointment.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Have access to a computer with internet connection.
  • Have a valid personal email address.
  • Have access to a printer & scanner.
  • Willing to complete all required paperwork you will receive from Tax-Aide - Once appointment is made you will receive an email from Tax-Aide with further instructions.
  • Be responsible for electronically scanning and emailing ALL required paperwork and tax documents to Tax-Aide volunteers.
  • Understand and agree that Tax-Aide volunteers will access your information and tax documents after all documents have been electronically scanned and emailed to Tax-Aide volunteers.
  • Be available to speak with Tax-Aide Preparers for at least 2 telephone conferences.
  • Be able to participate in Google Meet, video conference.
  • If filing a joint return, both parties must attend the required Google Meet (video conference) session. Google Meet does not require any additional software.
  • Must schedule an appointment through 211 to access this service.

Next Steps

211 will adjust hours of booking appointments based upon call volumes. Call 211 for updates. Be prepared to answer the above eligibility questions and others, as appointments are very limited, we need to ensure only eligible clients are scheduled.

Once your appointment is made, you will receive further information outlining the next steps in the process which includes but not limited to completing intake documents, consent forms, COVID screening, tax preparation worksheets, everything you will need to be prepared for your appointment.
