School was a struggle for Nancy. She just couldn’t keep up with the other students in her first-grade class at a local elementary school. Every evening she’d smile and tell her mom everything was fine, but in bed, with the covers pulled over her head, she’d cry. It got to the point where she didn’t want to go to school anymore. That’s when something wonderful and totally unexpected happened.
Nancy’s teacher told her that a very special person would be working with her every week. This person was called a buddy, as they were from Book Buddies, and they’d be giving Nancy some extra help and attention to help her read. When Nancy met her Book Buddy, she immediately liked her because their hair was the same color. But more than that, her buddy was there for her every week, just as promised. They not only worked on school things, but they talked about a little bit of everything. Nancy had found a friend. At the end of the year, her teacher brought Nancy up for an award. A reading award! Thanks to her buddy, Nancy was reading 3 grades ahead of her own! Thanks to United Way’s support of Literacy Connection’s Book Buddie’s program, children like Nancy are learning to love to read!
