Local businesses join United Way to support the “Change for Veterans” initiative

More than 50 businesses are participating and are placing coin containers for customer donations in their stores.

Each year there are holidays and reminders for people to show support to the country’s brave troops. Every Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day, Americans patriotically celebrate and cheer for those who have fought for us and for our country. Unfortunately, life after service often can be quite difficult for veterans. According to research conducted by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, it is estimated that roughly 40,056 veterans are homeless on any given day. They are also at risk of developing substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, and poverty due to their lack of resources after discharge. Help United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region assist our local veterans by donating to the Change for Veterans Coin Containers. One hundred percent of donations will go toward programs to provide legal services and help prevent homelessness for our local veterans.

Change for Veterans coin containers can be found in local coffee shops, delis, stores and many more locations throughout both Dutchess & Orange counties. You’ll find these containers in Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, Monroe, Fishkill, and many other cities and towns. Any amount given is very much appreciated; remember that every penny counts. Our two counties are home to 40,000 veterans; many of them need the housing and legal assistance that United Way helps provide. All proceeds (100%) from this event will be donated to local veterans to assist them with these issues.

“The Change for Veterans initiative is very important; all of the money raised will help fund great programs for veterans in our community,” explained Jeannie Montano, President and CEO of United Way. “By donating, people have the opportunity to give back to those who have served our country."

If you are unable to donate at one of the coin drops and would like to show support, feel free to donate online at www.uwdor.org/changeforvets. Even a penny will go a long way in assisting a veteran.
