United Way Celebrates Dr. Seuss’ Birthday on March 2nd During NEA’s Read Across America Day

On Thursday, March 2, United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region and nonprofit partner organizations will join together to celebrate the 20th anniversary of National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America Day celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday. An annual event, this is the third year United Way and community volunteers will honor Dr. Seuss and celebrate the fun and value of reading.

Area families are invited to attend public readings at the Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum (75 North Water Street, Poughkeepsie) that will be held at 12:00PM, 2:00PM, and 4:00PM on March 2 with museum admission. United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region asks everyone to join NEA and many of America’s leading literacy, youth, and civic groups on Thursday, March 2, to bring together a nation of readers under one hat – the red and white stovepipe made famous by the Cat in the Hat for a day of reading excitement!

“During last year’s Read Across America Day, United Way volunteers read to about 800 students in Dutchess and Orange counties,” remarked  Melissa Clark, Community Impact Manager. “This year we hope to engage almost 1,000 children and will be leading the readings under the familiar stove pipe hats!”

Read Across America Day, a National Education Association (NEA) project, was created to help children read and to motivate them to keep reading. The NEA strives to build a nation of readers not only on on March 2, but every day. For additional information, go to http://www.readacrossamerica.org/ or http://www.nea.org/grants/886.htm.
