Volunteers Needed in Dutchess & Orange Counties for Free 2013 Tax Preparation Program

Volunteers are needed in Dutchess and Orange Counties by the Hudson Valley CASH Coalition to be tax preparers and to work as greeters and program facilitators during the upcoming 2013 tax season.

Volunteer tax preparers will be trained to assist low-income working families, individuals and seniors with free tax preparation services in the CASH Coalition and AARP Tax-Aide sponsored community program in more than 40 locations in Dutchess and Orange Counties. Interested tax preparers must have personal experience preparing taxes. The CASH Coalition works to ensure people receive all the tax credits and refunds they are eligible for, and specifically for earned income tax credits.

Free comprehensive training by AARP Tax-Aide for tax preparers will be provided in Dutchess and Orange Counties. Training takes place in November and December. Tax preparation training ends with an IRS and AARP TaxAide certification.

Volunteers also are needed to act as greeters who assist those seeking tax help on site, and to help market the program or with personal computer technology issues. Minimal training will be held in January for these tasks. Work hours are flexible and some work can be done from home.

Volunteer tax preparers and facilitators set their own schedules and can work daytime, evening or weekend hours in their choice of locations. They can expect to provide 40 to 50 hours of service during the tax preparation period from January through the week of April 15, 2013.

In the past tax season 147 CASH Coalition volunteers helped 5,622 low and middle-income individuals, seniors and families in Dutchess and Orange to receive free preparation of their 2011 tax returns. 962 taxpayers of those who were helped qualified for and received $1,423,780 in Earned Income Tax Credits. It is estimated by the Coalition that the local economic impact of the monies received through the program by participants to be more than $9.2 Million.

The Hudson Valley CASH Coalition is a collaborative effort of the United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region, AARP Tax Aide, Catholic Charities, the IRS, Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County, the Dutchess County Community Action Partnership, Literacy Orange, North East Community Center, PathStone, Taconic Resources for Independence, Hudson Valley Region 2-1-1, Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, Citizens Bank, New York State Department of Social Services, and Fidelis Care.
