As many of us plan and prepare for our summer vacations, some of our neighbors are struggling to just take care of the necessities. Today we received a call from a school nurse at a local elementary school. She said that she is alarmed at the level of most basic needs that are going unmet for the school's children and is desperate for help.
The nurse said that this school is comprised of mostly low-income families, many of whom have parents that are incarcerated. While the school provides safety, warm meals, and a nurturing environment, she stated "You wouldn't believe the number of students that come to school without socks or underwear".
With summer right around the corner, this conversation provided an urgent call to action for all of us. We're initiating a hygiene drive today through June 17th and are soliciting donations from the community of new, unopened packages of underwear (boys & girls, sizes 4 - 6 or small-medium), socks (shoe size 12 - 3) to be sent home with the children in need this summer.
In addition, for two city high school hygiene pantries, we are accepting donations of personal hygiene items (soap / deodorant / shampoo / conditioner / sun screen). These pantries (closets) are accessible to students in need all summer long and are in desperate need of supplies and restocking.
If you would like to contribute to this hygiene drive, please drop off donations to either our Poughkeepsie or Montgomery offices during business hours (M - Th from 9am - 5pm and Fri from 9am - 4pm) Donations will be collected through close of business on Friday, June 17th.
Please feel free share this information and download, print, and post the flyer. If you would like to institute a drive through your community organization or workplace, please contact Rebecca Lull at firstname.lastname@example.org or 845-471-1900 ext 3113.
