To donate to a nonprofit through a QCD, you must be age 70 ½ or older and have a traditional IRA, SEP IRA, or SIMPLE IRA. You can then instruct your IRA custodian to directly transfer funds, up to a specified annual limit, to a qualified charity. This allows you to avoid paying taxes on the distribution while still contributing to charity.

Here’s a guide on how to donate through your IRA QCD:

  1. Contact Your IRA Custodian: Inform your IRA custodian of your intention to make a QCD to United Way and the amount you wish to donate.
  2. Initiate the Transfer: Your IRA custodian will then directly transfer the funds to the charity, either through a check or electronic transfer.
  3. Keep Records: You’ll need to keep a written acknowledgment from the charity confirming the donation amount, date and that no goods or services were received.
  4. Report on your Tax Return: You’ll need to report the QCD on your Form 1040 or 1040-SR, subtracting the QCD from your total IRA distribution.
  5. Special Notes: Annual IRA gifts cannot exceed $100,000.

Please notify Sue Manning at (845) 471-1900, ext. 3121 or smanning@uwdor.org when you make your gift.

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is a powerful tool for strategic giving. If you have a DAF, you can easily recommend a grant to United Way and support our vital work in health, education and financial stability. Learn how simple it is to direct your DAF to create lasting change in our community.

What are the benefits?

  • Simplicity and Convenience: Recommending a grant from your DAF is often a straightforward online process managed by your DAF sponsor.
  • Pre-Taxed Contributions: You've already received a tax deduction when you initially contributed to your DAF, making the grant recommendation a tax-efficient way to direct funds to charity now.
  • Strategic Philanthropy: DAFs allow you to separate the act of giving from the timing of the tax deduction, enabling more thoughtful and planned charitable giving.
  • Flexibility in Timing: You can recommend grants to United Way at a time that aligns with your philanthropic goals and the community's needs.
  • Anonymity (Optional): Many DAF sponsors allow you to make grants anonymously if you prefer.
  • Administrative Ease for United Way: Receiving grants from DAFs is a common and well-understood process for nonprofit organizations.
  • Potential for Larger Impact: Because DAFs allow for larger contributions upfront, you may have more funds available to grant to organizations like United Way.
  • Supporting a Trusted Organization: By recommending a grant to United Way, you're supporting a well-established organization with a proven track record of community impact in health, education, and financial stability.
  • Fulfilling Your Charitable Intent: Your DAF was established for charitable purposes, and recommending a grant to United Way helps you actively fulfill that intent.
  • Streamlined Record-Keeping: Your DAF sponsor typically provides records of your grant recommendations.

How do I give this way?

Step 1: Identify Your DAF Account

  • Locate the information for your Donor Advised Fund. This will typically be held with a financial institution or a sponsoring organization (e.g. Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, National Philanthropic Trust).
  • Have your account number or login credentials readily available.

Step 2: Access Your DAF Account Online Portal

  • Visit the website of your DAF sponsor.
  • Log in to your account using your username and password.

Step 3: Navigate to the "Grant Recommendation" or Similar Section

  • Once logged in, look for a section or tab labeled something like:
    • "Grant Recommendation"
    • "Make a Grant"
    • "Disbursed Funds"
    • "Charitable Giving"
  • The exact wording may vary depending on your DAF sponsor.

Step 4: Enter United Way's Information

However, unrestricted gifts allow United Way to allocate funds where they are most needed.

  • Follow the prompts to submit your grant recommendation. You may need to confirm the transaction.

  • Deadlines: Be mindful of any deadlines set by your DAF sponsor for grant recommendations, especially if you want the grant to be processed within a specific timeframe (e.g. end of year).
