Strategies to Inspire Volunteers, Interns & Staff for Maximum Success

On June 14th, United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region is offering nonprofit professional training to find, inspire and retain volunteers, interns and staff. The training will provide key tools to not only find the right people to support your organization's work, but also how to inspire and retain them. This program is FREE for nonprofit professionals in Dutchess and Orange Counties. Preregistration is requested.

The training, Strategies to Inspire Volunteers, Interns & Staff for Maximum Success, will feature two panel discussions as well as three workshop presentations.

Panel Discussions:

  • Student Service in the Hudson Valley will provide an overview of how higher education institutions are highlighting and encouraging their students to give back through partnerships in the Hudson Valley. The panelists are: Sara Alpert (Dutchess Community College), Melissa Gaeke, Ph.D (Marist College), Cammie Jones (Bard College), Lisa R. Kaul (Vassar College), Danny Malavé (The Culinary Institute of America), Kathleen O’Keefe (Mount Saint Mary College), Erica Wagner (SUNY New Paltz)
  • Internships Designed for SUCCESS will teach you how how to design the best internship possible both for your organization and the intern. The panelists are: Sara Alpert (Dutchess Community College), Melissa Gaeke, Ph.D (Marist College), Cammie Jones (Bard College), Lisa R. Kaul (Vassar College), Danny Malavé (The Culinary Institute of America), Kathleen O’Keefe (Mount Saint Mary College), Erica Wagner (SUNY New Paltz)

Workshop Presentations:

  • Melissa Gaeke (Marist College) will provide an overview of the key strategies to find, train, inspre and retain the volunteers who can be the backbone of your organization in "Volunteer Management 101." 
  • Sara Alpert (Dutchess Community College) will discuss internships and how to find the right interns, what your requirements are and how to ensure it's a great match for the intern and your organization in “How can we get you AMAZING interns?.”
  • Melissa Clark (United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region) will give tips on inspring your staff, volunteers and interns in "Nonprofit Coaching for Your TEAM."

There will be time for networking, so please feel free to bring your business cards and handouts to share!

There is no charge to attend, but registration is limited and is open to all nonprofit professionals in Orange and Dutchess Counties. To guarantee your space, register now. This training is presented thanks to the support of the New York State Volunteer Generation Fund.

About the Presenters:

Sara Alpert is the Community Based Learning Coordinator at Dutchess Community College. She has an MSW from the University at Buffalo and has worked as a social worker, a community organizer, and worn many other hats in a variety of nonprofits and institutions across New York State.
Melissa Clark is the Director of Community Impact at United Way of the Duchess-Orange Region, where she has worked for the past 5 years. Prior to United Way, Melissa served as an AmeriCorps VISTA for two years, a national service program aimed at alleviating poverty. Melissa holds a BA in International Relations from SUNY New Paltz and MA in Social & Public Policy from SUNY Empire. She serves on the Board of the Orange County Youth Bureau, the Advisory Council of the Hudson Valley Young Professionals and as Co-Chair of the Dutchess County Bringing Agencies Together Coalition. 


Melissa Gaeke
, Ph.D is the Director of the Center for Civic Engagement and Leadership and Professional Lecturer in Political Science at Marist College.   She has a doctorate in Public Administration from the University of Southern California’s Sol Price School of Public Policy.  Her interests include engaging students in community based learning activities that engage them in addressing pressing social concerns; and working with nonprofit organizations to build their capacity to access resources and connect with stakeholders.  
Cammie Jones serves as Assistant Dean of the Center for Civic Engagement at Bard College. In her role, Cammie focuses on the development of international and domestic civic engagement academic programs which include  Bard International Network Courses, the Engaged Liberal Arts and Sciences Program, the Study of the U.S. Institute for Student Leaders on Civic Engagement and the Global Engagement Fellows Program to promote international exchanges between students in Annandale and throughout the Bard International Network. Cammie is involved in several local non-profit boards and committees. Cammie holds a B.S. in Kinesiology from the University of Texas at Austin and a M.A. in Higher Education Administration from Louisiana State University A&M.
Lisa R. Kaul, D. Phil. (Vassar College), is Director of the Office of Community-Engaged Learning at Vassar College. She holds a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Delhi and an M.Phil and D.Phil in Social and Cultural Anthropology from Oxford University.

Danny Malavé currently serves as the Assistant Dean for Student Conduct and Community Engagement at the Culinary Institute of America. Danny has worked in various roles within higher education for the past eight years specifically in Student Life and co-curricular engagement.  At the CIA, Danny works to develop co-curricular learning opportunities for students through the creation of service projects and co-curricular partnerships with community organizations.
Kathleen O’Keefe has over 18 years of experience in higher education and has worked at Mount Saint Mary College since 2005. She currently serves as the director of the Center for Career and Experiential Education. Kathleen is actively involved in the community and serves on several committees with various groups including Leadership Orange, the American Heart Association, and the United Way. Kathleen has her Bachelor’s degree from Siena College and her Master’s degree from Manhattan College. Kathleen resides in Montgomery with her husband Michael. Her three children, who are all Mount Saint Mary College alumni, visit often!
Erica Wagner, Service Learning Coordinator at SUNY New Paltz, has created and implemented a variety of volunteer programs at SUNY New Paltz including the annual Volunteer Fair, Make a Difference Day, Alternative Spring Break, and Saturdays of Service. She also serves as the President of the Board of Directors for UlsterCorps, an organization working to match volunteers with opportunities in Ulster County, NY.
