In celebration of Men’s Health Month, first 100 eligible men to receive free health screenings on Friday (6/21) will receive a $20 gift card from Adams Fairacre Farms

Did you know that currently, men are dying an average of 5 years earlier than women and lead 9 out of 10 of the top causes of death? Through the Minority Male Wellness and Screening Initiative, United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region is celebrating Men’s Health Month in June by partnering with HRH Care Community Health and the New York State Department of Health to offer free health screenings for the Poughkeepsie community this Friday, June 21stfrom 12noon to 4pm. The first 100 eligible men to have a health screening will be given a $20 Adams Fairacre Farms gift card. The Community Health Screening is held at Family Partnership Center located at 29 North Hamilton Street in Poughkeepsie. (If you are interested in this event, but do not have transportation, please call 845-471-1900 ext 3106 to arrange free transportation within the City of Poughkeepsie only.)

Many life-threatening illnesses can be silent killers. Protect yourself and your loved ones and have your free screening that will include blood pressure monitoring, BMI (Body Mass Index) and the A1C blood test that will alert you to prediabetes, diagnose type 1 and type 2 diabetes or, if already diagnosed with diabetes, will monitor how well you’re managing your diabetes. In addition, there will be a PrEP worker available for those interested in learning more about preventing HIV/AIDS. HRH Care Community Health will be distributing free Narcan Kits on a first-come, first-served basis.

Be a role model for the next generation by showing them how important health is. Can’t find a babysitter? No worries, free child care will be provided while you get your screening. There also will be giveaways including LED lightbulbs from Central Hudson, goodie bags, lunch and refreshments, and hourly drawings for gift cards and bikes and bike helmets. (Goodie bags are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.)

Eight community organizations will be providing information about their resources: Breast and Prostate Cancer Peer Education Program, Catholic Charities Community Services of Dutchess County, Community Action Partnership for Dutchess County, Dutchess County Department of Behaviorial and Community Health, Esperanza Dutchess County Hispanic Organization, Family Services, Hudson River Housing, and Pathstone.

According to the CDC, Americans use preventative health services at about half the recommended rate. Be proactive--take control of your health this summer through this great community resource! Poughkeepsie residents, these few routine tests taken this Friday can make a big difference to your tomorrows.

While the event is free, preregistration is requested. Go to uwdor.org/register-healthscreening to sign up. For additional information, call 845-471-1900 ext 3106 or email cnicoletti@uwdor.org.
